Master the Game: How Pickleball Scoring Works at Picklemall

How Pickleball Scoring Works at Picklemall

At Picklemall, we strive to offer the best pickleball experience with our state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology. Here’s a detailed look at how scoring works in pickleball, so you can make the most of your time on our courts.

Basic Scoring Rules

  1. Points: Points can only be scored by the serving team.

  2. Winning a Game: A game is typically played to 11 points, but a team must win by 2 points.

  3. Winning a Match: Matches are usually best two out of three games.

Serving

  1. Starting Serve: The game begins with one player from the serving team serving the ball from the right-hand side of the court.

  2. Alternating Serves: When the serving team wins a point, the server switches sides and serves again. The receiving team does not switch sides.

  3. Service Sequence: In doubles, both players on the serving team have a chance to serve before the serve switches to the opposing team, except for the first service sequence of the game.

  4. Calling the Score: The score is called in a three-number sequence: server’s score, receiver’s score, and server number (1 or 2).

Switching Sides and Servers

  1. Switching Sides: Players on the serving team switch sides after scoring a point. The receiving team never switches sides.

  2. Second Server: When the first server loses the serve, the second server then serves until they lose the serve. After both servers lose their serve, the serve switches to the opposing team.

  3. Side Out: When the serve moves to the opposing team after both servers have lost their serve, it is called a "side out."

Faults

A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation. Faults by the serving team result in loss of serve or side out. Common faults include:

  1. Out of Bounds: Hitting the ball out of the court boundaries.

  2. Volley Errors: Volleying the ball before it has bounced once on each side.

  3. Net Violations: Touching the net with any part of the body or paddle.

  4. Service Faults: Incorrect serves, such as serving above the waist or serving into the wrong service box.

Unique Rules

  1. Double Bounce Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed. This means the receiving team must let the serve bounce, and the serving team must let the return bounce before either team can volley the ball.

  2. Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen): Players cannot volley the ball while standing in the non-volley zone, which extends 7 feet from the net on both sides. They may enter the zone to play a ball that has bounced.
